Selection Process
A grant review committee is chaired by Wiess college magisters and includes other members of the Rice community including associates of the college, faculty, staff, and students. Committee members review all proposals and select the recipients. Applicants are normally undergraduate students but other applicants will be considered if the project enhances undergraduate student life.
Proposals will be evaluated according to a rubric based on the following qualities:
- Innovation: Does this project offer a new enhancement to Rice student life?
- Feasibility: Has the student addressed the logistical and administrative barriers to project completion? For example, if the project assumes the use of Rice property or facilities, have the applicants already obtained permission to use those resources?
- Breadth of impact: How many students will benefit from this project and how?
- Length of impact and continuity plan: Will this project affect student life on an ongoing basis, and if so, what is the plan for continued funding and leadership over time?
Recipients are allowed one calendar year to use the awarded funds and any unused funds must be returned to the original grant.

Please note: The grant is not intended to provide funds for ongoing or established events or organizations. This is not an “infrastructure” fund. New initiatives or events will be considered by established organizations but preference will be given to new and innovative projects that have the potential to benefit Rice’s undergraduate population.
Deadline for submissions (without exception): Sunday, November 16, 2025 at 11:59 p.m.
